ABOUT

Emelie is a painter interested in the perception of nature, inspired by lived experience, observation and memory. Through layering and erasing oil and water-based mediums, she develops a reactive method of painting to simulate the emotional and optic experience of being within the forest.  Her experiences growing up in a remote town in northwestern Ontario, working as a forest firefighter, and living in a sub-arctic community in the NWT, have informed her connection to place and time. As a result, she works from feelings of nostalgia, solitude, wonder and concern, and uses painting as a way to grapple with the complexity and tension of nature.

Emelie holds a BA(H) with a specialization in Studio art from the University of Guelph and is a first year MFA candidate at Western University.

Here is what I see:

A window into the distance

With a light that confirms: time is true!

Along with change, and constancy.

When time travels through me:

I feel its newness, a spark

Searching for answers and clarity,

And never quite knowing

Yet, the unknown feels true

And the light does, too
